Which file types are supported for uploads?

There are various areas in SA where you can upload an attachment. Depending on the functionality and purpose of the upload, the following is a list of extensions that are supported for uploads as of the 2.1.0 SA release.

General

Attachment files can be uploaded in multiple areas of the system (for example, in Activity Log entries, placement applications, comments, etc), and are typically image files or document files.

  • Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF
  • Documents: PDF, ODT, ODS, ODP, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, TXT, RTF, TIFF

Live Sessions

When it comes to Live Sessions, uploads are more restricted for security reasons. When creating a new Uploaded Session, whether it's an audio or video upload, SA supports the most common files types as shown below. And in any Live Session type, whether uploaded or cloud-recorded, captions can be added to media playback.

Due to different configurations of web browsers and operating systems, playback in SA cannot be guaranteed. For example, an uploaded  .webm video file can be played back successfully on a Windows 7 machine using Chrome or Firefox, but cannot be played back on a MacOS machine using Safari.

SUPPORTED & RECOMMENDED

The following extensions are supported by SA and strongly recommended due to being playable in virtually all web browsers. Most audio and video files can be converted to meet these recommendations.

  • Audio: MP3
  • Video: MP4
  • Captions: VTT, TXT (formatted per WebVTT standards)
SUGGESTED ALTERNATIVES

In cases where uploading or converting to an MP3 or MP4 media type is not possible, these extensions are suggested as alternatives due to being typically supported by one or more of these web browsers:  Safari, Chrome, FirefoxOpera. Results can vary depending on the system and/or browser version, but the following table can be used as a guideline based on our own testing.

Safari Chrome Firefox Opera
AAC
FLAC
M4A
M4V
MOV
MPG
MPEG
OGA
OGG
OGV
QT
WAV
WEBM
LIMITED OR UNSUPPORTED

The following extensions can be uploaded in SA, but playback of these media types is often NOT supported by SafariChromeFirefox, and Opera

  • Audio: WMA
  • Video: ASF, AVI, FLV, MKV, WMV

We highly recommend converting media files to MP3 or MP4 prior to adding them in an Uploaded Session, especially if planning on sharing it (by adding participants or assigning it as a task). This ensures the most consistent playback experience possible across a multitude of systems.
